Posted by Admin on August 26, 2009 at 14:14 pm

http://www.symbianfrance.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/play.jpg

Do you have a Palm Pre, Blackberry, even a PSP and have always wished that you can sync your iTunes library with that device. Well I’ve found a solution for you! Apple doesn’t want 3rd party devices to sync with iTunes, luckily there is freeware that will allow you to sync a 3rd party device with iTunes.

Double Twist is very easy to use, all you have to do is just launch the application and plug in your device, then just simply drag and drop music and videos to transfer them. Double Twist is available for both Windows and Mac, and the best part is it’s FREE!

So there you go, if you need to sync a 3rd party device with iTunes then this is a good and free solution. If you would like to download the app click here.

Islands Photoshop Tutorial

Posted by Admin on August 25, 2009 at 15:12 pm

Finished Product:

http://saltytech.com/uploads/islandswallpaper.jpg

I was just playing around in Photoshop and made this cool image of islands using just a few filters. I posted the image on twitter and some of you wanted to see a tutorial, so here you go.

Note: I will not be posting screenshots because I feel they aren’t needed for this particular tutorial. If you have any questions just @saltytech me on twitter.

  1. Make a new document, I made it the resolution of my desktop: 1680 x 1050.
  2. Set your colors to the default, black (foreground) and white (background).
  3. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds
  4. Then go to Filter > Sketch > Plaster, adjust the size of the “islands” by playing around with the Image Balance slider.
  5. Optional: Go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap.
  6. Finally Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and play around with the colors to achieve a nice blue or any other color you like!

Note: The “islands” will look different every time you do this.

There you go it’s that easy, Hope you guys liked the tutorial, I might make more in the future. You have to be registered to leave a comment now, I changed it because of all the spam. If you don’t want to register and have a question just @saltytech me on twitter.

Laptop Hunter Ads - Lauren and Sue

Posted by Stuart on July 24, 2009 at 11:59 am

The ad:

So, as usual, they go into Best Buy. They are looking for a laptop with Speed, Portability, and Battery life for under $1700. Then there’s the normal “You find it, you keep it”. Lauren says she is going into law-school and needs a laptop that is portable. The look at some PC’s, starting with a Dell. Then they go and look at the MacBook Pros. She says “This one only has a 250 GB hard drive” “It seems like your paying a lot for the brand”. She loves speed and loves running programs.  They end up going BACK to the first Dell they looked at and bought that one. The employee says “There’s only one left”. The total price was 971.99. “A lot less than my goal of $1700″ “Yaaaa.”

MY Opinion:

Okay, my stuff here might be a little bit scrambled, but I’ll try to keep it as organized as possible. First off, when they gave the specs she wanted, I thought the MacBook Pros where just fine for her. Then they go look at stuff. When she said “This one ONLY has a 250 GB hard drive” I was like WHAT???? Are you serious? You said you where going into law-school. Why would you need something bigger than that?!  “It seems like your paying a lot for the brand”. I will have to agree with this a little bit. But then again, I don’t agree with her that much. When you are a law student, especially, you want a computer that IS fast and will work when you want it to and the way you want it to. A Mac would give you awesome speed, portability, and functionality. Plus you wouldn’t have to worry about viruses or installing tons of stuff in order to run something.

For Lauren, I would suggest either the higher-end MacBook Pro 13″ or the low end 15″. They both have a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, a pretty good graphics card, 250GB hard drive, and a 7 hour battery. If she wanted portability, I would go with the 13″. If not, I would choose the 15″.

So, what are your thoughts about this ad?

Times

Posted by Stuart on April 7, 2009 at 17:36 pm

No, i’m not talking about what time it is. Times is a neat little RSS application for the Mac operating system made by Acrylic. Except this isn’t your ordinary RSS reader.

Times turns everything into a newspaper-like layout, making it easy to find and read anything you want to. You can add different pages/sections of your “newspaper”, each with its own title or category. You can then add feeds to the different spots on that page. Times comes with 25 different pre-entered feeds that you can use or delete. Adding different ones is a charm. Just click on the plus icon and you can type in the URL and Times will pick up the name of the feed (which you can edit if you like). If you have a URL pasted to your clipboard, then it will automatically show up in the URL spot. One cool feature in Times is the shelf. Simply drag the article you want to the shelf, and you can save it for later reading- without worrying about you loosing it between all the other ones. If you want to inform the  world with what you’re reading, just enter your login information (for sites like Digg and Twitter).

Helpful Website: W3 Schools

Posted by Admin on March 23, 2009 at 17:09 pm

You may or may not have heard about this website but it is a great website that offers a ton of lessons on programing, and best of all the lessons are FREE! If you are new to coding and want to learn how to code in a certain language then check out W3 Schools. You might want to make a website yourself but don’t know how, they have many lessons on different coding languages. Even if you know HTML and CSS you might want to learn PHP or JavaScript to expand how you can develop websites.

Once you read the whole lesson you can take a short 20 question quiz to test your knowledge and see what you still need to work on.

This is a popular website but I had no clue it existed until I was interested in learning CSS. I have a basic understanding of CSS but want to learn how to code it, not use software like Dreamweaver to do the coding for me. The site has really helped me so I wanted to share it with everybody and maybe it will help you!

Here is a list of the programing languages they have lessons on:

1. HTML

2. CSS

3. XML

4. JavaScript

5. ASP

6. PHP

7. SQL

8. ASP.NET

And many more that i don’t have room to list, but you can take a look at all the other great tutorials they have at w3schools.com

Wordpress Plug-in- Page Links to

Posted by Admin on February 22, 2009 at 10:21 am

I got an e-mail the other day asking how I made the Toolbar page on the site link to the download page of the toolbar.  If you don’t know what I mean click the Toolbar button and you will see. I thought this might help out some of you, so I decided to make a blog post and not just reply to the e-mail.

By default Wordpress  doesn’t have the option to link a Wordpress page you create via the Wordpress dashboard to an external URL, meaning a website anywhere on the web. This is very useful if you want to link to let’s say your twitter or youtube and you don’t want to make a page with a link in it but you want the button to just link to that page. This is very easy to do with a Wordpress plug- in that you can download and install on your blog, this plug-in is called “Page Links to”.

Download “Page Links to” here

Once you install and activate this plug-in all you have to do is make a page from your Wordpress dashboard and under the text box you should have a new tab at the very bottom titled “Page Links to” click to expand it and just type in the URL of the website you want the page to link to, don’t forget the http:// or it will NOT work. That’s it now the button will link to the URL of your choice.

Here are just step by step instructions I found on the developer’s website:

  1. Upgrade to WordPress 2.6 or higher
  2. Upload page-links-to.php to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  3. Activate the “Page Links To” plugin in your WordPress administration interface
  4. Create (or edit) a page to have a title of your choosing, and a parent page of your choosing (leave the content blank — it won’t be used)
  5. Down below, find the Page Links To meta box and add the URL you’d like it to link to
